BIOGRAPHY
Akis Vassilopoulos is a painter and set designer. He was born in Patras in 1967. He is the son of impressionist painter Giorgos Vassilopoulos, from whom he received his first lessons in painting.
In 1993, he was admitted to the School of Fine Arts at Anglia College of Cambridge.
In March 1994, he held his first solo exhibition at the LEVER HELLAS exhibition space. Since then, he has been professionally active, organizing solo exhibitions, participating in themed and group shows, and collaborating with esteemed galleries in both Greece and abroad.
The themes of his art vary but mainly focus on the human presence, either as a form or figure.
Over time, he has completed thematic series such as:
-
Cityscapes
-
Rainy Days
-
Nightlife
-
Erotic works of emotional expression
-
Old railway stations and trains
-
Black and white compositions
-
Horse races, riders, and horses
His artistic expression is defined by expressionism. His style is characterized by abstraction, bold color contrasts, and free brushstrokes.
In his diverse subject matter, he has applied and adapted techniques of realism and impressionism, striving for the most effective and complete rendering of each composition.
He often portrays a dreamlike world, intentionally avoiding photographic detail in faces or objects. His main goal is to evoke emotion—a sense of melancholy that transcends logic.
The movement in his compositions captivates the viewer, often creating the illusion of motion, breathing life into even inanimate objects or still lifes.
For his techniques, he uses oil paints and acrylics, painting with brushes but particularly favoring the palette knife, which he says “adores him as much as he adores it.”
Since 1995, Akis Vassilopoulos has maintained his own private art gallery and studio.
About his art, he states:
“Painting primarily gives the viewer the opportunity to see the world through a new lens.
It serves many roles—decorative, educational, entertaining, and even investment-worthy.
But above all, through painting, the creator is called to help the viewer see the beauty of shape and color, the simplicity and economy of visual language, and the quality of technique.”
